Abstract

The study influence of students mode of learning on academic performance in government in Ikwuano Local government Area of Abia state. Descriptive design was adopted. Four research questions and four null hypotheses guided the study at 0.05 level of significance. The targeted population for this study is 380 senior secondary two students in public secondary schools in Ikwuano local government area of Abia state. The sample size for this study was 191 senior secondary two students offering government. The sample size was selected using simple random sampling technique. The sample size was selected using Krejoice and Morgan Table. The instrument for data collection was the researchers’ self-designed questionnaire titled “Students Learning Attitude and Academic Performance Questionnaire (SLAAPQ). The instrument was validated by two experts. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Crohbach alpha on a sample of 30 students in Government College Umuahia in Abia State which is not part of the study environment. The coefficient alpha yielded an index of 0.05 which is reliable. Data collected from the field were analyzed using mean rating and standard deviation to answer research question and t-test to test the null hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that collaborative learning influences students’ academic performance in government in Ikwuano local government area of Abia State. Students agreed that peer learning has an influence on students’ academic performance in government in Ikwuano local government area of Abia State. Team learning has an influence on students’ academic performance in government in Ikwuano local government area of Abia State.  The researcher recommends amongst others, that the school management with the help of the counseling department should motivate and encourage students to diversify their learning culture and attitude in other to achieve quality performance in their various subject selection especially in government.
